Martin Malk, STRATEGIST
Martin Malk, has been a Strategic Partner of R&R Global for over a decade and is a 32 year veteran of the lodging industry who specializes in accounting and financial planning. His distinguished career has encompassed every phase of financial management and given him the opportunity to work in over thirty hotels throughout the United Sates and the Caribbean who ranged from luxury resorts to limited service properties. Malk also has ten years of experience within a wide variety of industries in public accounting that hasproven most valuable when assessing what type of accounting systems and controls are most practical and effective for a hotel property.
Martin Malk began his ascent up the lodging industry career ladder in one of America’s true Grande Dame’s, the Hotel del Coronado in San Diego. At the Del he served as its Controller for ten years and Chief Financial Officer for eight years. During his tenure he recreated the hotel financial management function, benefits administration, information technology and purchasing divisions, and achieved record profitability levels. He assisted the Del’s owners' with the due diligence process resulting in the $330m sale of the hotel in 1997.
He later advanced to the position of Corporate Controller for the Stanford Hotel Corporation where he had responsibility for thirteen branded hotels including Hilton, Starwood and Marriott brands. While at Stanford Hotels he played a major role during the recent the economic downturn in implementing cost reductions in payroll and other expenses through implementation of contingency plans, staffing guides, centralizing and combining certain job functions. In addition he improved cash flow through reduction in receivables, reduced inventory levels, and tighter review of capital projects.
Prior to joining Stanford Malk oversaw a private financial manager practice. In this role he was retained to perform outsource work for major hotel chains and small and medium size hotel companies. Malk’s strong ability to communicate and initiate change in a positive way with hotel associates, resulted in his being able to quickly get the support of a hotel management teams and ramp up the financial management of a properties in a disintegrating situations - resulting in property's returning to profitability. In the role he has played as internal auditor, Malk has performed internal audits for over twenty hotels ranging in size from 300 to 1,800 rooms in major cities such as New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles.
Martin Malk has a Bachelor’s degree from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa and is a Chartered Accountant, Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Hotel Administrator. He has been a member of the finance committee of the American Hotel and Lodging Association and was part of the task force to publish the 9th edition of the Uniform System of Accounts for Hotels and Motels and has been published in hotel publications and conducted seminars for various hotel companies. He has also been a guest speaker at been a speaker on financial management at various hotel conventions, Cornell, Michigan State University, and San Diego State University hotel schools.
